The Medieval Muse
Senhora del Mundo [Chandos]
One-woman performance of monophonic songs from 1100-1300
An inspiration to Sir Walter Scott and Wagner in the 19th century, the lays of medieval trouvéres such as Crétien de Troyes, established the context of chivalric love and drama which pervades secular medieval song. Sara sings songs from the core medieval song repertoire both sacred and secular: German Hymns of Hildegard of Bingen, rustic love songs of the Minnesingers and courtly French Trouvéres’ motets of complaint and war. From England Sara sings the earliest surviving secular songs c.1300. She accompanies herself on the knee harp, hurdy-gurdy and positive organ whilst inter-weaving her songs with tales of the period.
